Wales v Rest of the World (5/6th Final).
Another exciting game of cricket.
We won by 3 wickets and finish in 5th position in the over 60s World Cup tournament.
We won the coin toss and elected to field. After 45 overs the Rest of the World XI were 154 for 8 after some outstanding bowling and fielding.
Skipper Richard Harris of Cresselly Cricket Club finished his 9 overs with 2 for 19, Ammir Ikram of Swansea Cricket Club had 2 wickets for 38 off his 9 overs. The other wickets were taken by Colin Tucker of Dyffryn Cricket Club 1 for 17 off 7 overs, Gareth Edwards of Bangor Cricket Club 1 for 30 off 9 overs and Pembroke Cricket Clubs Stephen Durston with his 1 wicket for 27 off 5 overs.
Hugh Quick was exceptional behind the sticks, with 2 stumpings and 2 catches.
Aamir Ikram also had a quality run out.
With a target of 155 set the “run chase” was on…..but with us on 6 for 62 we were under pressure.
Then a real top-quality partnership happened. Stephen Durston joined Gareth Edwards at the crease and the whole game changed.
A match winning partnership……Gareth Edwards finished on 67 not out with another Man of the Match performance. His 67 was off 76 balls.
Stephen Durston scored an outstanding 26 off 33 balls.
Early on in the innings Peter Docherty of Penarth Cricket Club scored 29 off 80 balls.
8 runs were needed off the last over with Gareth Edwards and Colin Tucker batting. The first ball went for 2 off a no ball, 5 to win off 5 balls, the second ball went for another 2, 3 to win. The third ball a safe single was taken, 2 to win. Colin Tucker facing…….and cooly he hit the ball through cover point for a four.
A very good winning performance by all.
So, we finish in 5th place, which is amazing achievement.
Well done to everybody involved. We are a very proud nation.
