Wales v Sri Lanka.
Today we kick off the World Cup with a game v Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka won the coin toss and elected to bat first. After some good batting, a target of 177 for 5 was set.
It was great having our opening bowler and captain Richard Harris, back on the field after a short illness. Our 5 wickets were taken by the left-arm spin of Tata Cricket Clubs Peter Doyle who had 3 wickets for 31 off his 6 quality overs and the ever-reliable Bangor Cricket Club cricketer Gareth Edwards, 2 wickets for 30 off his 9 overs. The two other spinners Aamir Ikram and Stephen Durston also excelled with the ball.
What a finish…..we reached the target off the very last ball!
Hero’s Stephen Durston of Pembroke Cricket Club and Colin Tucker of Duffryn Cricket Club got the winning run off the very last ball of the very last over of our innings to win by 2 wickets.
A great start to the tournament.
There was some outstanding middle-order batting by the 3 musketeers, Paul Bennett of Chepstow Cricket Club with 42, Baglan Cricket Club’s Paul Kenealy with 26 and our star allrounder Gareth Edwards with an outstanding 37 at a crucial time.
There was also some quality cricket played at the latter part of our innings by, as mentioned above, Stephen Durston 16 off 13 balls and Colin Tucker who scored 8 off the 6 balls he faced.
What a great way to start our World Cup adventure. A win against Sri Lanka.
