Final Pool Match Vs Wales. Report by David Head.
Clear sky’s and sunny conditions greeted us at Maroochydore, a big improvement on the frustrating rain yesterday. Wales won the toss and sent Australia in, and started very well having Australia 2 for 38 after the first 15 overs. Eric Higgins and Peter Judd started to get Australia on track with an 84 run partnership before Judd went go a well compiled 38. Bill Saker joined Higgins and they put on another valuable 33 run partnership before Saker went for 17. Peter Dudderidge then joined Higgins and they put on a further 30 runs before Higgins was out for a magnificent 93 runs off 112 balls. Dudderidge went for a valuable 21 runs and Greg Hoysted scored 13 in the very respectable Australian total of 6 for 201.
Australia had confidence that their bowling and fielding could defend the total, but they would not have expected what happened with the Wales Innings. Under the pressure of opening bowlers Tim Pellen and Mark Trafford-Walker lost 4 for 11, with Pellen taking 2 for 9 off 6 overs and Trafford-Walker 2/7 off 9. Wickets continued to tumble under the pressure from Australia, with Wales collapsing to 8 for 28, until a rear guard action saw them finish with a total of 67. Mike Goldsmith picked up 3 for 19 off 5 overs. Bruce Worthington, Bill Saker and Peter Dudderidge also picked up a wicket each in a comprehensive victory for Australia, which saw them finish their Pool Rounds undefeated and on top of the ladder of their Pool. Semi Finals will be played on Monday.
